According to survey report, India has the highest prevalence rate of Leprosy in the world. Over 60% of World's leprosy cases are in India. It is estimated that nearly 2 million people in India are disabled due to leprosy.
In spite of the fact that leprosy is readily curable, superstitions and social isolation abound. Especially for those who were not quick enough to obtain the treatment leprosy's crippling affects set in.
We are proud and grateful for the support of American Leprosy Mission in our outreach to people affected by leprosy. ALM partners with OEI in reaching people affected by leprosy and disabilities through several programs. Volunteer Training and Outreach OEI’s volunteer training and outreach program trains church volunteers to assist OEI in their outreach program to the leprosy affected and people with disabilities in the villages. Urban Leprosy Outreach Volunteers also assist OEI staff in reaching the leprosy affected in the cities through house visits and outreach to leprosy colonies and hospitals serving the leprosy affected. Correspondence Department Many leprosy-affected and disabled live in far off villages where frequent follow-up is not possible. OEI bridges the distance through its Correspondence Department that maintains regular contact through letters, a bi-monthly newsletter, and monthly village-based rallies.
